De werkelijke ranglijst

Consumptie-gebaseerde accounting kent de emissies toe die vervat zitten in alles wat een huishouden consumeert, inclusief import. Dat is de eerlijke manier om te tellen, en het produceert een ranglijst die consumentenadvies grotendeels omdraait.

De verwarmingsrij is waar Europese huishoudens de grootste enkele kans hebben, en de besparingen op emissies van warmtepompen hebben hun eigen literatuur [4]. Het is ook de meest kapitaalintensieve, wat de reden is dat het ondervertegenwoordigd is in advies gericht op individuen.

Samenstelling van de huishoudelijke voetafdruk

Werken koolstofcalculators?

Calculators zijn formeel geëvalueerd [1], en de eerlijke samenvatting is dat ze educatief zijn in plaats van accountinginstrumenten. Twee calculators die identieke invoer krijgen, verschillen routinematig aanzienlijk, omdat ze verschillende aannames maken over netintensiteit, vervatte emissies, toewijzing en systeemgrenzen.

Dat maakt ze niet nutteloos. Inzien dat een enkele vlucht een jaar van ijverig recyclen overstijgt, is een oprechte en nuttige update, en het is er een die bijna niemand zelfstandig bereikt. Gebruik de volgorde, niet de cijfers.

Gedragsverandering, en de grenzen daarvan

Pro-milieu gedragsinterventies zijn uitgebreid bestudeerd. De bevindingen weerspiegelen gedragsverandering overal: informatie alleen verandert weinig, standaardinstellingen en structurele veranderingen werken beter dan aansporing, en effecten vervagen zonder versterking — hetzelfde patroon dat onze gewichtsverlieswebsite rapporteert voor een totaal ander domein.

Wat pleit voor eenmalige structurele beslissingen — isolatie, een warmtepomp, de volgende auto, waar je woont ten opzichte van je werk — boven dagelijkse microkeuzes die voortdurende aandacht vereisen.

Wat is het grootste dat ik kan doen?
Het hangt af van je omstandigheden. Voor de meeste Europese huishoudens: verwarming, dan autogebruik, dan vliegen, dan dieet.
Is recyclen zinloos?
Nee, en het is klein in vergelijking met de grote vier. Het doen ervan vervangt ze niet.
Zijn koolstofcalculators nauwkeurig?
Ze hebben grote onzekerheid en zijn het niet met elkaar eens [1]. Gebruik ze voor rangschikking, niet voor een getal.
Maakt individuele actie uit als de industrie meer uitstoot?
Huishoudelijke consumptie drijft een groot deel van de industriële emissies. De framing als een keuze tussen individuele en structurele actie is onjuist.
