Hvilke personlige endringer påvirker faktisk tallet?
Fire ting dominerer karbonavtrykket til et vanlig europeisk hushold. Nesten ingen av dem er det miljøkampanjer ber deg om å endre.
Den faktiske rangeringen
Forbrukbasert regnskap tilskriver utslippene som er innebygd i alt et hushold forbruker, inkludert import. Det er den ærlige måten å telle på, og det gir en rangering som forbrukerrådgivning i stor grad inverterer.

Oppvarmingsområdet er der europeiske husholdninger har den største enkeltmuligheten, og utslippsbesparelser fra varmepumper har sin egen litteratur [4]. Det er også den mest kapitalintensive, noe som er grunnen til at det er underrepresentert i råd rettet mot enkeltpersoner.

Fungerer karbonkalkulatorer?
Kalkulatorer har blitt evaluert formelt [1], og den ærlige oppsummeringen er at de er utdanningsverktøy snarere enn regnskapsinstrumenter. To kalkulatorer som får identiske input skiller seg rutinemessig betydelig, fordi de gjør forskjellige antagelser om nettintensitet, innebygde utslipp, fordeling og systemgrenser.
Det gjør dem ikke ubrukelige. Å se at en enkelt flytur veier mer enn et år med flittig resirkulering er en genuin og nyttig oppdatering, og det er noe nesten ingen kommer frem til uten hjelp. Bruk rekkefølgen, ikke tallene.
Atferdsendring, og dens begrensninger
Intervensjoner for pro-miljøatferd har blitt studert omfattende. Funnene speiler atferdsendring overalt ellers: informasjon alene endrer lite, standarder og strukturell endring fungerer bedre enn oppfordringer, og effektene avtar uten forsterkning — det samme mønsteret som vår vektreduseringsside rapporterer for et helt annet område.
Som argumenterer for engangs strukturelle beslutninger — isolasjon, en varmepumpe, neste bil, hvor du bor i forhold til jobb — fremfor daglige mikrovalg som krever kontinuerlig oppmerksomhet.
