Is recyclen het nuttigste wat je kunt doen?
Het is de moeite waard, en wordt consequent overschat door het publiek in vergelijking met verwarming, transport en dieet.
Wat het bewijs daadwerkelijk laat zien
Studies naar de publieke perceptie tonen herhaaldelijk aan dat recycling wordt beoordeeld als een van de meest effectieve persoonlijke klimaatacties, terwijl de ecologische voetafdruk het ver onder energie-, transport- en voedselkeuzes plaatst. [1]
Deze claim is in het openbaar veel zekerder dan in de literatuur. Het wordt herhaald omdat het intuïtief en commercieel nuttig is, niet omdat de proeven het op die sterkte ondersteunen.
De catch
Het risico is substitutie: het doen van de zichtbare kleine actie en het gevoel hebben dat de rekening is vereffend. Deze bias voor een enkele actie is zelf een gedocumenteerd fenomeen.
