Does buying local food reduce emissions?
The most popular food-and-climate action, and one of the least effective, because transport is a small share of food emissions.
What the evidence actually shows
Life-cycle work repeatedly finds transport a small fraction of total food emissions for most products, with production dominating. What you eat generally matters far more than how far it travelled. [1]
This claim is far more confident in public than in the literature. It is repeated because it is intuitive and commercially useful, not because the trials support it at that strength.
The catch
There are real reasons to buy local — seasonality, local economies, freshness. Emissions is the weakest of them, and air-freighted produce is the exception that genuinely matters.
