Vermindert lokaal voedsel kopen emissies?
De populairste actie op het gebied van voedsel en klimaat, en een van de minst effectieve, omdat transport een klein aandeel van de voedseluitstoot is.
Wat het bewijs daadwerkelijk laat zien
Levenscyclusonderzoek toont herhaaldelijk aan dat transport een klein percentage van de totale voedseluitstoot voor de meeste producten is, waarbij productie domineert. Wat je eet is over het algemeen veel belangrijker dan hoe ver het heeft gereisd. [1]
Deze claim is in het openbaar veel zekerder dan in de literatuur. Het wordt herhaald omdat het intuïtief en commercieel nuttig is, niet omdat de proeven het op die sterkte ondersteunen.
De catch
Er zijn echte redenen om lokaal te kopen — seizoensgebondenheid, lokale economieën, versheid. Uitstoot is de zwakste daarvan, en luchtvrachtproducten zijn de uitzondering die echt van belang is.
